All About Birds

Here are some more of the collages I made over the Thanksgiving holiday.
In this first one, I used watercolor and gray drawing ink for the background, the photograph of the woman is from a magazine ad, and the text and bird illustrations are from All About Birds-- another one of my many vintage books from Goodwill.

The background of this one is a photograph of an abstract crayon drawing that I edited on the computer, the photo in the middle is an images from one of my posts, and the text and illustrations are from All About Birds.

The background of this one is made up of layered dictionary pages, and I placed another edited crayon drawing on top of it. The photograph is from a magazine ad, and the text is, once again, from All About Birds. The word INFINITE at the top is cut out from the background of an edited outfit photograph.

Thesaurus and Stegosaurus

These are some collages that I made over the Thanksgiving holiday with some altered images, thesaurus pages, and pages from a book about dinosaurs. You may recognize the images from this recent post.

Wintry Hats.

I'm so excited about this colder-by-the-day weather. I finally get a chance to break out my wintry coats and hats! This is just a quick outfit I threw on to run some errands.

Feeling bookish.

Antique books from Goodwill are one of my new favorite items. Not only do they make fabulous collage materials, but they are just super adorable in general. These two are my favorites-- All About Dinosaurs and The Glory of the Ordinary.

Stripes, Polka Dots, and Custo Barcelona.

I've had this outfit planned out in my head for quite some time now, but I haven't actually had the chance to wear it until now. When my mom cleaned out her closet recently, I became the recipient of a few old, but new to me, Custo Barcelona tops. I must admit, this one is probably my least favorite. The front is a green and blue profile of a woman, but I much prefer the back, so I am wearing it backwards! The crosshatched scene is absolutely adorable.
It's fairly obvious that these pictures are heavily edited, but this outfit is much more fun in teal!
In real life, the skirt and stripes of the shirt are red, and the the top is green, yellow, and red.

Plants rarely die of natural causes.

As of late, I really like using old books as collage material. I bought the book Happy House Plants at a thrift store a couple months ago, and I was immediately drawn to the illustrations of almost every house plant imaginable. I loved the passage in the book about why plants die, and I thought it would be an interesting subject for a collage.
It reads..
"Plants rarely die of natural causes. Surprised? Well, the number one cause of death among plants is simply improper care. That's right, you and I are a plant's greatest enemy. On the other hand, only you and I can save a plant from dying an early death."
I quite like the unnecessary and highly dramatic connotations of this passage, and I think it is fascinating in an odd sort of way.
The background is white acrylic paint mixed with the crumbled remains of a dead sunflowers from my garden. I sanded off the top layer to bring out more texture and let the brown of the sunflower debris show through more. To finish it off, I coated it with a thick layer of Mod Podge.
I apologize for the weird angles. The Mod Podge coating gives it a huge glare from above.

What a weekend!

Over the weekend, one of my out-of-town friends came to visit me in Nashville. I met her at a pre-college program at SCAD this past summer. She, like me, loves art, fashion, and vintage shopping! We had a grand time perusing the racks of Goodwill, Katy K's Ranch Dressing, Local Honey, Savant Vintage Couture, the Franklin Antique mall, and Urban Outfitters.
Our finds from the weekend include 2 vintage dresses, a Moschino Cheap & Chic blazer, and a Chinese jacket from Goodwill; an Elvis bolo tie and a pair of baby blue, woven combat boots from Katy K's; two reworked vintage skirts from Local Honey; a Ukulele play-along record and two antique photos from the Franklin antique mall; and tights, a Sherlock Holmes hat, pink headphones, and a Russian doll necklace from Urban Outfitters. Wow! What a weekend!

At Katy K's Ranch Dressing on 12th Avenue South in Nashville.
Lily is wearing a blazer, shorts, belt, and tights from Anthropologie.
I'm wearing a Thakoon for Target skirt, my red cowboy boots, a She & Him Concert tee shirt, and a Moschino Cheap & Chic jacket (one of my Goodwill finds this weekend!).

Lily's super adorable outfit-- She's wearing BC clogs, Anthropologie floral tights, a J. Crew cardigan, and a necklace from her mom's closet.

Lily wears flowers too!

I'm obsessed with these RACHEL Rachel Roy shoes...

Thursday, November 18, 2010

As I was browsing the interwebs recently on the Rachel Roy website, I was inspired by this grunge-chic sweater. I thought it would be cool to cut up and old sweater and do this. The back is the regular sweater material. Cool beans.

Pink Perfection.

I think this very well may be the perfect shade of pink lipstick... it's minimalist and modern, but still super bright. It also has blue undertones, which tend to be quite flattering.

Brand New Old Shoes.

I mentioned these shoes in my antiquing post from the other day. My friend bought these at Franklin Antique mall. I'm kind of obsessed, and I'm jealous of her itty bitty feet that can fit into these sorts of shoes. In general, it's difficult to find cool old shoes in a size 9 and a half.
These shoes make me think of the song "Brand New Shoes" by She & Him, especially the part that Zooey Deschanel sings at the beginning... "I had some brand new shoes. They were all red, but they gave me the blues."

These are two pieces from Shop Nasty Gal that I have been obsessing over for the past few days. I adore these Jeffrey Campbell Wreckers, but I don't know if I could put up with a two-inch platform for anything other than photos. I can't see myself wearing them anywhere.

This cage sweater is such a cool piece! It would be great to layer over tanks and tees any day of the week.

I came across this embellished mannequin head in a gallery yesterday, and I'm so inspired. I love it!

Today I went antiquing with some of my friends in downtown Franklin, Tennessee. I had a grand time taking photos with my semi-fisheye lens. I bought this incredible giraffe brooch! I'll post pictures soon!

My friend, Celeste bought these incredible vintage shoes! I'll be sure to get some closeups soon!

I'm super in love with this sweater...
